To achieve these high positioned targets QANTAS, Australians leading Airline, decided to use personalized RFID - tags for preferred passengers. The main target was to speed up the Check- In of VIP-Passengers and to guarantee a safe and smooth baggage transport.
As soon as the passenger checks in he only needs his RFID-hand baggage or luggage-Tag to get identified, same as he would be identified when using an airline ID - card.
His luggage will be identified at his destination in the same way, by using of the RFID tag at his luggage. It will be presorted and can be transported accelerated.
Why QANTAS does go for an AutoID manufacture on the other side of the globe? Not only as a question of price. Asia is closer.
The reason is quite simple:
- On one hand the scanner is not only used by a smart ladies hand but also by strong luggage transporters who handles thousands of bags daily so the scanner needed to be rugged.
- On the other hand a complex system technical challenge needed to be fixed. All airlines have to work with the worldwide ticket system called AMADEUS which is installed at all airports. To connect a RFID scanner to a terminal is not a big deal, but as soon as AMADEUS is involved its becoming more complex, as several special and extensive security, crypto and plausibility protocols needed to be implemented, especially as the RFID tag is used as an ID card.
he special challenge for PANMOBIL scanners based on the fact that the workflow at a baggage conveyor, where no terminal is available, is much more different. The PANMOBIL scanners have to run the secure AMADEUS airport solutions standalone like a complex PC terminals.
