Brain surgery with self-dissolving RFID implants

February 29, 2016

After a brain surgery the physicians need to know if the surgery was a success or if there have been complications which in worst case scenario could lead to the patient’s death. The University of Illinois in the United States developed a RFID technology which can be placed on top of the patients’ skull for monitoring and it is self-dissolving.

Is this a breakthrough for the physicians?

It has been a success in the laboratory, but now researcher want to find out if this medical procedure works as good for humans.

The idea behind it is to place a tiny implant on top of the patients’ skull after a brain surgery. This tiny sensor connects to an embeddable wireless transmitter that lies on top of the patients’ skull through RFID technology with the receiver placed next to the patients’ bed. These small sensors can monitor pressure and temperature within the skull. If something is wrong with those data the wireless RFID sounds the alarm. Physicians are able to monitor the recovery of their patients. This way of monitoring with implants is not exactly new, but the following fact is revolutionary:

After a specific time the RFID implants melt away.

It eliminates the need for additional surgery to remove the monitors and reduces the risk of infections and other complications. Currently such measuring instruments  are connected via cables with external devices. Unfortunately these measuring instruments cause allergic reactions or complications which actually should be prevented. If the self-dissolving implants pass the test successfully, it will be a breakthrough in medical monitoring.
