Tested: RFID-Technology suitable for vehicle identification

July 27, 2016

A company called TÖNNJES E.A.S.T. in Lower Saxony, Germany presented the results of a big field trial with IDePLATs in Netherlands. The technology of vehicle identification has been tested a year long on a hundred military vehicles. The most important perception according to the company is that the vehicles with CHIP based RFID-Technology can be securely identified.

Testing goals: Reliable vehicle identification

The testing period started 2015 on the Military Base Oirschot in Lower Saxony Province Nordbrabant, Germany. Over a hundred vehicles and trucks have been equipped with IDePLATs and IDeSTIXs. The labels with integrated RFID-Chip were put on license plates and front windows. From then on authorized Reading-Devices that were installed at the gates captured the labels on the license plates and front windows. The maximum distance between the vehicle and the Scanner has been measured 12 meters and a possible speed of 150 kilometer per hour. These testing results also apply for bad weather like rain, snow or foggy days as well as dirty license plates, the company writes in their press release.

For the field trial the y used the new wide reaching Crypto-Chip UCODE DNA from NXP. This passive security chip combines a high reading rage with the most modern encrypted technology of CHIP-Authentication. "Only stationary or mobile Reading-Devices with a suitable, secret and cryptography Code are able to decode the unique Identification numbers", emphasizes Maurice Geraets, CEO at NXP. "Different obstacles have been conquered throughout the field trial" explains Koert Kirpestein, Owner and CEO of Kirpestein. " Many military vehicles are equipped with a metal underclothing which lead to disturbance for the RFID-Antenna. A main assignment has been that these vehicles also been captured probably. Besides, the field trial also enabled the workout between hardware and software."

After a successful field trial on the military base in Netherlands the RFID-Technology is supposed to be assigned in different countries: "The successful results of the field trial have already lead a wide introduction of the RFID-Chips in electrical plates in projects in South America. Especially the data protection and the sinking costs for the introduction of electrical license plates make this solution very attractive for the application in Europe", Olaf Renz, CEO at TÖÖNJES is pretty sure about. The application of electronic license plates also opens new business models. For example the costs for parking lots could be automatically deducted from the account, if the vehicle owner is interested. The technology can also be used for traffic management to avoid manipulative vehicle registration and identification.
