A 17 year old student developed his own Barcode-System

He wanted a better organization for his school books and therefore Janek Blankenburg from Neufahrn in Bavaria, Germany developed a Barcode-System in his computer science class. It is supposed to amplify the regular black and white 2D Barcode with colors and transmit more information.

390000 data information instead of 2048

Instead of writing down all the books data manually, Janek Blankenburg wanted to digitalize the old-fashioned administration system of his school, writes the "Süddeutsche Zeitung". To get a better overview of all loaned out school books according to the pupil the solution is a central computer data base and a 2D barcode on every book. But all the currently existing barcode types’ didn´t have enough room for all the information he needed to be on there. Beside the name of the pupils who borrowed the book and the date he also wanted the names of all the previous pupils who also borrowed that book as well as all the damages existing on the barcode to be documented.

To get all this information on the barcode he thought about the black and white 2D barcode and developed it further. The result is a new and individual structure of the 2D barcode with colored fields:

  1. In the left upper corner there is a black field the rest of the corners are white. That is for his self-written computer program to recognize the barcode's orientation.

  2. Additionally there are red, green and blue fields in his code the so called "calibration fields" which helps the program to orient and also be able to capture the barcode even if the light or the printing quality isn't that good.

  3. An additional control field prevents capturing errors

  4. In the other 8 variable fields all the necessary information about the book can be saved.

With this barcode structure consisting out of 5 different colors the possibility is given to save 390000 data information instead of 2048 with the regular 2D black and white barcodes. He realized the capturing of the codes with his smartphone camera. With that the barcode data are compared to the self-programmed data base.

Blankenburg is going to the national competition for young explorer in the beginning of April with his project. Just in case it becomes an international breakthrough he has already secured his idea legally in 2015.
